Whether you are going overseas with a group of friends, your family or on your own, it is important that you take care during this exciting stage of your life.

Once you have booked your flight, the first thing to organise is your travel insurance. Travel insurance is highly recommended when travelling, as you never know what you can experience or what may occur in a foreign country. This can be purchased through your travel agent, however there are many other places to purchase it at possibly a better price.

You can buy travel insurance through house or car insurance companies such as AAMI, through your bank including ANZ and Commonwealth Bank, or, simply search travel insurance companies online and you will be provided with a large list of companies. If you have time, get a few quotes from different companies and you will be surprised of how cheap you can purchase it if you take the time to shop around.

Once you have organised all your insurance, make sure you photocopy all your documents that you are taking overseas. Leave them with a family member or friend just in case you lose them overseas.

Make sure you photocopy your credit cards, passports, itinerary, insurance details and any other relevant identification you are taking.

Whilst you are travelling, ensure you have relevant information with you such as travel insurance details, phone numbers of your family and friends and the phone number of your travel agent if applicable. You never know when these will come in handy. It is always a good idea to let someone know back home where you are and that you are safe.

Always have name tags on your luggage, and, for extra visibility tie coloured ribbon to your bag so you can see it when it is coming off the conveyer belt. Always keep your bags close no matter where you are as there are many professional pick pockets that can spot a tourist a mile away. They are quick and clever so don't be a victim of their crimes as this could put a damper on your trip.

No matter if it is your first time or if you are a regular traveller, always take necessary precautions so you keep safe and travel smart. This will allow you to have the time of your life without any worries.
